Transformers 4.7.3.4 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a transformer?
A
consists of a primary and secondary coil wound on a iron core.
2
Q
What is iron used as the core?
A
it is easily magnetised
3
Q
What does a step-up and step down transformer do?
A
- a step-up transformer whilst increasing the voltage, decreases the current so it reduces the resistance and therefore power loss
- vice versa for step-down transformer
4
Q
Why do transformers only work with AC supply?
A
because it will produce a magnetic field that moves through the core and forces electrons in the secondary coil to flow/move
5
Q
How does the number of coils transformer effect whether it steps up or down?
A
if there are more turns on the secondary coil than on the primary then the voltage will step up (and vice versa)
