transformers Flashcards
national grid
network of cables and pylons that transfer electrical power from power stations to homes
step up transformer
increases V
decreases I
causing less power loss in the form of heat due to current heating up the high R cables
step down transformer
decreases V
increases I
to safe levels for household use
turns :voltage
the ratio of turns on the secondary coil to the primary coil determines how much V transforms by
transformers efficiency
SUPER efficient but loose some energy as HEAT when currents heat the could or currents are induced in the iron coil not the secondary coil
how transformers work
ONLY AC
the ac in the primary coil makes a changing magnetic field
this flows through the iron core into the secondary coil
the secondary coil cuts the changing magnetic field
this induces a voltage
(size depends on no. turns)
