Transformations Flashcards
What are transformations?
A transformation is a process that manipulates a polygon or other two-dimensional object on a plane or coordinate system. Mathematical transformations describe how two-dimensional figures move around a plane or coordinate system. A preimage or inverse image is the two-dimensional shape before any transformation.
A transformation is a way of changing the size or position of a shape. Every point in the shape is translated at the same distance in the same direction.
What are the different types of transformations?
There are four main types of transformations: translation, rotation, reflection and enlargement (dilation).
Rotation: A rotation occurs when an object is turned around a fixed point. To describe a rotation you need to give the angle of the rotation, the direction of rotation and the centre of rotation.
Reflection: A reflection is a type of transformation that flips a shape in a mirror line (also called a line of reflection) so that each point is the same distance from the mirror line as its reflected point.
Enlargement: An enlargement is a transformation where an object maps to an image of the same shape but a different size. The object and the image are said to be similar. An enlargement requires a centre of enlargement and a scale factor. To perform an enlargement you have to know the centre of enlargement and the scale factor.
Translation: A translation moves a shape up, down or from side to side but it does not change its appearance in any other way. We describe translations with vectors. ( x )

Combining Transformations:
Combining transformations is nothing but doing more than one transformation on a geometric shape.
