What is ‘idealized influence’?
When a coach gains their athletes’ trust and respect by acting as a positive role model (“practise what you preach”)
What sort of behaviours does idealized influence involve?
- Discussing and modelling pro-social values and behaviours (doing what’s right instead of convenient)
- Showing vulnerability and humility (apologizing for mistakes)
What is ‘inspirational motivation’?
Where a coach inspires athletes by what they say and what they do (“Believe in your athletes”)
What sort of behaviours does inspirational motivation involve?
- Discussing goals and expectations
- Expressing confidence in athletes’ capabilities
- Implementing a collective vision
- Providing meaningful and challenging tasks and roles
What is ‘Intellectual Stimulation’?
Where a coach empowers their athletes to develop independence and to see issues from different perspectives (“involve athletes in the coaching process”)
What sort of behaviours does intellectual stimulation involve?
- Eliciting athletes input
- Sharing decision making and leadership responsibilities
- Emphasizing the learning process
What is ‘individualized consideration’?
Where a coach creates a supportive and inclusive learning environment (“person-centred approach)

- Showing interest in athletes feelings and perspectives
