What happened in the building of the Berlin Wall?
Fleeing east to west.
West was capitalist and more idealistic for Germans.
It had more money, shops full of goods and overall more freedom.

What was Krushcevs response to Kennedy?
Khrushchev saw Kennedy as weak and inexperienced, so he could bully him. He asked Kennedy to withdraw US troops from Berlin, but Kennedy refused.

Originally barbed wire but was replaced by a concrete wall on 13th August.

Families were divided Berliners couldn't go to work chaos and confusion Guards were given orders to shoot anyone who crossed hundreds were killed
What was the LONG TERM effect of building the Berlin Wall?
Created a major crisis
In October 1961, US diplomats crossed regularly into east Berlin to test soviet reaction.
27th October, soviet tanks shut off checkpoint Charlie.
US and soviet tanks faced off all day.
After 18 hours, one by one, 5 metres at a time, the tanks retreated.
Overall Effects of the Berlin Wall
Krushcevn ordered Ulbrict to avoid actions that would increase/cause tension.
West saw the wall as a prison wall.
Communists saw the wall as a protective shield.
Wall became a huge division of Europe, Germany and east and west.
