Transformation and redemtion Flashcards
how are transformation and redemption represented in the novella
the story is Scrooges journey of transformation from lonely old miser to kind hearted generous man
what is the message from Dicken’s
regardless of social situation we get to choose if to show kindess to others. In the novella those who chose to show kindness are happy and fulfilled those who do not end up lonely and bitter.
what is Scrooge like at the start of the novella
he makes a conscious effort to reject acts of kindness - he rejects Fred’s invitation and a chance to donate to charity
Why does Scrooge change - redeemed (2)
Through visions of the 3 spirits he begins to see his choices have turned him into a miserable man even though it has made him rich, He sees that after his death he will be forgotten and missed by nobody just like Jacob Marley
He sees how people who choose to live lives with compassion are rewarded with happiness even if they have less eg Fezziwig, Crachets, Fred and Belle all try to be good to others and all have different social situations are all happy in their own ways
when do we see scrooges redemtion what does Dickens demonstrate through Scrooges redemtion
at the end of the novella Dickens shows the reader it is never to late to change and make amends
what lesson does Scrooge learn
that although he can not change his past choices he can control his actions in present and future and chose to do good where he can
what happens to Scrooge as a result of his transformation
he is rewarded with happiness he was lacking through company of family and friends
what is the context that relates to transformation and redemption (4)
1 redemption is a key concept in Christianity - the soul is saved and welcomed into heaven
2 Christianity teaches it is never to late to save your sous as long as you show genuine remorse for past sins
3 Dickens shows it is never to late to change your behaviour and make amends
4 At the time the book was written most people in England were religious and would have
state key quotes and explain them (4)
1 “hard and sharp as flint from which no steel had ever struck out generous fine” - the similie emphasises Scrooges total lack of warmth and friendship
2 “spirit.. conduct me where you will. I went forth last night on compulsion and learnt a lesson which is working now” Although Scrooge is initially reluctant to teach him he begins to show change of heart when the ghost of Christmas past arrives promising to learn from it’s lessons
3 Scrooge is not “past all hope” - after final spirit visits Scrooge promises to be a changed man- Dickens shows it is never to late to change and start making amends for past mistakes
4 “i am light as a feather.. as happy as an angel… as merry as a school boy…. as giddy as a drunkman” Scrooge uses similies to describe his happiness after his transformation link back to the start of the story and contrast similies used to describe his coldness and isolation in stave 1
what transformation does Scrooge undertake
through visits of the spirit Scrooge finds redemption and is transformed from a miser into someone who knows how o keep Christmas better than anymore
A the start of the novella Scrooge is bitter, selfish and lonely. But learns from the spirits to embrace Christmas spirit and change his ways turning him into a charitable, respectable figure who uses his money for good.
how does scrooges transformation show
Scrooges change is complete with his shouting out to the rest of society gone from being cold and solitary to being warm and welcoming “ a happy new yar to all the world”
new year is symbolic as it traditionally is about a fresh start - a time when new years resolutions are made
Scrooge is resolving to be a better man and looks out for others and not just himself. To demonstrate this he purchases the prize turkey to share with the Crachets - this is particularly extravegant as turkey is only eaten by the rich, goose is cheaper and more common in those days
