Transfer Moulding (thermosetting plastics) Flashcards
1
Q
Define transfer moulding
A
Transfer moulding heats thermoset powder in a transfer pot and from there injects it into a mould
2
Q
What types of products are manufactured by transfer moulding?
A
Strong, heat-resistant high-volume insulators (can be complex and have metal inserts) such as housings for integrated circuits (chips), moulded cable ends and plugs
3
Q
Explain briefly, the three step process of transfer moulding
A
- Thermoset resin powder is placed in the heated transfer plot.
- A plunger forces the soft thermoset plastic into a cooled split mould. The plastic sets (cures).
- The dies of the mould are opened, and the product is ejected.
4
Q
How is transfer moulding better than compression moulding?
A
It is more suitable for more complex shapes than compression moulding.
