Transcription and Translation Flashcards
List three differences between RNA and DNA
- Sugar is ribose in RNA
- RNA is single stranded, DNA is double
- RNA contains Uracil in place of thymine
Where is DNA found in the cell?
Nucleus
Where is RNA found in the cell?
Ribosomes in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus
Describe the process of transcription
(OCCURS IN NUCLEUS)
-Starts with DNA
-RNA Polymerase comes in and splits each strand in half (replicates the bottom strand)
-RNA polymerase can’t make thymine, so it makes uracil (all T’s Replaced with U’s)
-Pulls out messenger RNA
(unzips then rezips the DNA)
Describe the processs of translation
(OCCURS IN RIBOSOMES)
- mRNA attaches to a ribosome
- mRNA is read
- Original codon from the mRNA is used to find the Amino Acid, so methionine is the anticodon of AUG
- Amino acid chain links to become a protein
What are the similarities and difference of Mitosis and Meiosis??
Mitosis: Asexual reproduction, one division, two daughter cells produced, duplicates chromosomes, maintains the number of chromosomes, occurs in body cells
Meiosis: Two divisions, four daughter cells produced, sexual reproduction, chromosome number is halved, daughter cells not identical to parent cells, produced gametes, occurs in reproductive organs
