Biomes Assessment Flashcards
What would make an organism more likely to survive in a new location?
If the new location had similar traits to the original
What is a biome?
Areas with a range of conditions
What is evidence?
Information used to support or refute a claim
What does a tropical rainforest biome include? (describe it)
-Warm and humid year round -20-30 celcius -High rainfall all year
What does a desert biome include? (describe it)
- Low precipitation year round
- 10 celcius in winter, 35 in sumemr
- soil is poor nutrients
What does a savannah biome include? (describe it)
- Rainfall is from 500-1500 per year
- Unevenly distributed rainfall
- long dry season, and a rainy season
- soil drains quickly
- fires can occur during dry season
What does a chaparral biome include? (describe it)
- Receives mostly rain during teh winter months
- Winter, spirng and fall have cool temps, while summers are warmer
What does the temperate grasslanf biome include? (describe it)
- Wide range of temps
- precipitation throughout the year
- most rain is in late spring and summer
What does the taiga biome include? (describe it)
- Ground is frozen for most of the year
- winters are long and cold with averages of -15 celcius
- summers are short, moist, temperatures are 15 celcius
What does a temerate deciduous forest biome include? (describe it)
- four distinct seasons
- avg winter temps fall below freezing
- summer average is 25 celcius
- six month growing period of fertile soil
What does a taiga biome include? (describe it)
-Very cold temps and low precipitation (-30 or lower)
What is an invasive species?
Non-native species that enters a new area, csusing harm to native species and the environment, the economy, or human health
What types of factors will determine whether or not an invasive species will become invasive or not?
What predators it has, rapid growth and maturity, high volume of seed production, ability to out compete native species, or hare hard ot eliminate or control
Whatt is a habitat?
Specific location where an organism lives within an ecosystem
What is a non-ntive?
When a species is introduceed to an area where it is not naturally found
