1. DNA helicase breaks hydrogen bonds between bases, causing DNA to split and expose bases
2. RNA polymerase moves along DNA template strand and attaches free nucleotides to their complimentary base DNA
3. RNA polymerase makes short strands of pre-mRNA until it becomes a terminator sequence
4. Section of pre-mRNA is spliced together to remove intron sequence and join exon sequence to form mRNA
