What is training
It’s the process that involves increasing the knowledge and skills of a worker to enable them to do their job more effectively
Why is training important
Training is important because it allows employees to acquire new skills, improve their existing ones, this leads to an increase in productivity and therefore a better performance at work
What is induction training
Its the training given to new employee when they first start a job
What are the advantages of induction training
-reduces employee turnover
-increases employee retention
-improves productivity
-helps new recruit to settle in
-enhances the reputation of the organisation
What does induction training consist of
-tour of the workplace
-introduction to job and colleagues
-company history
-health and safety
-company policies
-introduction to senior staff
What is on the job training
A type of training that takes place at the workplace while doing the job
What are the types of on the job training
-watching another worker (observation or supervision)
-mentoring
- job rotation
What are the advantages of on the job training
-output is being produced
-relevant because trainees learn by actually doing the job
-cheaper than other form of training
-easy to organise
What are the disadvantages of on the job training
-output might be lost if workers make mistakes
-may be stressful for the workers particularly if working with others
-staff might be frustrated is they’re unpaid trainees
-can be dangerous
What is off the job training
The type of training that takes place away from the workplace
What are the advantages of off the job training
-output is not affected if mistakes are made
-learning cannot be distracted by work
-training could take place outside work hours if necessary
-customers and others are not put at risk
Disadvantages of off the job training
-no output because employees do not contribute to work
-some off the job training is expensive
-takes time to organise
-some aspects of work cannot be thought off the job
What is the main benefit of training
The main reason for training is to provide workers with the skills and knowledge needed to do their job effectively
