What is discrimination
Choosing one person rather then another based on characteristics is known as discrimination
What does the sex discrimination Act 1975 state ?
It states that a person must not be discriminated against because of their gender
What does the equal pay act 1970 state
It states that an employee doing the same or similar work as a member of staff of opposite sex in entitled to equal rates of pay and working condition
What is the race relations act 1976
This makes it illegal to discriminate on groups of race. This means that a business cannot appoint someone who is white in preference to someone who is a ethnic minority
What is age discrimination
It occurs when a disinvest decision is made on the grounds of a person age
WHat happens if a business tries age discrimination
They’ll be involved in expensive legal problems
What is minimum wage laws
Minimum wage is minimum amount per hour which most workers are entitled to be paid
What are the reasons that the government set legal minimum wages
To reduce poverty
To help businesses
To benefit disadvantages workers
What are the effects of minimum wage laws on business
If a business employs very large number of people and pays them below the minimum wage, clearly their wage bill will rise if a minimum wage is introduced
