Traits Inherited on Sex Chromosomes Flashcards
why is it important to understand how sex chromosomes are inherited?
To predict phenotypes and genotypes in offspring
A female inherits her X chromosome from which parent?
Both
X-linked traits are always passed on the X chromosome from mother to ____ or from either parent to ____. But there can be no direct ______ transmission of X-linked traits.
Son, Daughter.
male-to-male
Genes carried on the X chromosome are said to be ____, and those on the Y chromosomes are ____.
X-linked, Y-linked
What chromosome trait is rare?
Y-linked traits
No other Y linked traits besides ______ are yet clearly defined, although certain gene products have been identified.
Infertility
Human male having only one of a pair of genes, for X-linked traits, because he has only one set of X-linked genes.
Hemizygous
Is expressed in females if the causative allele is present in two copies.
X-linked recessive trait
an X-linked trait passes usually from an unaffected _______ to an _______.
Heterozygous mother, affected son.
Criteria for an X-linked Recessive Trait
- Always expressed in males
- Expressed in female homozygous but very rare in a heterozygous
- Passed from mother (heterozygote or homozygote) to son
- No father to son transmission but could affect daughters
- Both parents are affected/mother is heterozygote of an affected female
- A heterozygous female will transmit the trait 1/2 to her son and 1/2 to her daughter.
