Training Techniques Flashcards
What factors determine the reward used for a dog?
It must have adequate meaning to the dog
One that can be controlled by the handler
Not have an adverse effect on the training
What is needed for reward schedules to be effective?
The reward chosen must be a sufficient value to the dog, so that control over its behavior can be gained
First establish a rapport or bond with the dog so that verbal/physical praise influences the dog
Secondly, always be able to control the reward
What is a fixed ratio reward schedule?
The ratio is always 1:1. The reward must be provided within the optimum timeframe of .5 to 1.5 seconds in administered to the dog on a one to one basis
What is a variable ratio reward schedule?
Variable ratios must begin with the ratio of 2:1. That is, there is no way to begin the variable ratio schedule in a smaller ratio than 2:1. For every two correct responses, the dog is provided with his reward only once.
Once the dog has demonstrated that it can perform the task successfully using the ratio of 2:1, then progressed to the rat ratio of 3:1. This will continue until the ratio of 5:1 is achieved
What does a fixed interval reward schedule require a dog to do?
It requires the dog to perform a task for a given amount of time. In a fixed interval reward schedule, progress in predetermined blocks of time before the dog is rewarded
What does a variable interval reward schedule require a dog to do?
It requires the dog to perform several learning trials within a varied amount of time
