Training options Flashcards
What are benefits of training
Improves employees work performance (knowledge and skills)
Improves employees confidence and job security
Improves the quality of customer service
What are the two training options
On-the-job training and off-the-job training
What is on-the-job training
On-the-job training is when specific skills or knowledge are taught to employees and occurs at the workplace using the equipment or facilities at
the business location.
What is off-the-job training
Off-the-job training aims to improve the skills and knowledge of employees away from the workplace at a training institution where an external trainer will be used.
What are examples of on-the-job training
Cash register training using staff supervisor
Online quiz or competency training
Epipen training using an external trainer on campus
What are advantages of on-the-job training
Cost effective, cheaper as mentors or supervisors can train employees and do not require a separate wage or hiring of external training facilities.
Trainees use the actual equipment that is within the workplace so are better
equipped to learn the exact skills required
Immediate feedback from internal training
What are disadvantages of on-the-job training
Bad habits of experienced staff may be passed on within the business
If real tools and equipment are used, the business may not be able to carry
out day-to-day activities, disrupting production
The trainer may have to leave their duties to carryout the training, reducing
productivity
What are examples of off-the-job training
safe service of alcohol, first aid courses, computer or IT training courses
What are advantages of off-the-job training
Better quality trainer can provide broader training experiences
More structured and organised with clear assessment processes
What are disadvantages of off-the-job training
No access to workplace tools or equipment so training may be irrelevant
More expensive
Similarities between on-the-job and off-the-job training
Both on-the-job and off-the-job training improves the skills and knowledge of employees, helping them to improve their achievement of business objectives.
The course trainer or manager who is carrying out the training may have poor skills and introduce irrelevant, time wasting activities, or teach bad habits to the trainees.
Differences between on-the-job and off-the-job training
On-the-job training is at the workplace whereas off-the-job training is conducted away from the workplace.
On-the-job training is cheaper as mentors or supervisors can train employees and do not require a separate wage or hiring of external training facilities
whereas off-the-job training is more.
