training methods Flashcards
what is functional fitness?
traditional training methods focussed on specific exercises and specific muscles
individuals train to improve their speed, agility, quickness, strength, and mobility
what are the main functional fitness training methods
periodization, mobility, core, cardiorespiratory, resistance, plyometrics, SAQ (speed/agility/quickness), balance, HIIT (high-intensity interval)
what is periodization?
the development of an overall training plan separated into distinct training periods
maximizes performance and reduces the risk of injury and mental burnout
what is the macrocycle?
pre-season, in-season, and off-season
what is mobility vs flexibility training?
in order to move a muscle through its range of motion with control (mobility) you need strength
a flexible person may or may not have that strength
what is core training?
involves the back and abdominals
training programs for the core should focus on improving core stability, core strength, and eventually core power
what is cardiorespiratory training?
composed of base training, interval training, sport-specific training
what is hiit?
high-intensity interval training?
short periods of intense exercise with long breaks
what is plyometric training?
involves a series of explosive drills usually using the body’s own weight as the overload
what is saq training?
speed/agility/quickness training
being able to react speedily to generate a strong force in a certain direction and then rapidly change the direction of that force
what is balance training?
training the ability to maintain equilibrium while standing still or while moving
