Traffic Controls Flashcards
What does a single broken white line on the highway mean?
White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. A single broken white line indicates that you may cross the line to change lanes when is safe to do so.
What does a solid yellow line to the right of the center line of the highway mean?
Unclear question.
If you mean a solid yellow line to the right of another yellow line, both in the center of the road, it means passing is not allowed in that lane because of oncoming traffic (may turn left or pass a cyclist when safe).
What does a double solid yellow line in the center of the highway mean? A double
solid white line?
Yellow: Vehicles moving in both directions may not pass the line.
White: Crossing a double white line and changing lanes is not allowed.
What do the colors of traffic signs indicate (red, orange, yellow, etc.)?
Red: Stop. Do not enter. Wrong way. Yield.
Orange: Construction and maintenance warning.
Yellow: General warning; advisory of unexpected roadway conditions.
Fluorescent yellow-green: High-emphasis warnings of schools, pedestrians, and bicycling activities.
White/black: Regulatory; control traffic, set limits, or give commands.
Green: Guide or directional information.
Blue: Driver guidance; also used to indicate parking spaces for disabled drivers.
Brown: Areas of public recreation, cultural, and historical significance.
When more than one vehicle approaches a four-way stop sign, which one moves
first?
Vehicles proceed through the intersection in the order they arrived. The first vehicle to reach the intersection should move forward first. If vehicles arrive at approximately the same time, each driver must yield to the driver on their right.
What does a red traffic light mean? What does a flashing red traffic light mean?
Red light: Come to a complete stop at the stop line. Remain stopped until the light turns green. You may turn right if there is no “NO TURN ON RED” sign and the way is clear.
Flashing red light: Used only at dangerous intersections, it should be treated like a stop sign; stop and proceed only when safe.
After a full stop at a red traffic light, when may a driver turn right?
After stopping, you may turn right if there is no “NO TURN ON RED” sign and the way is clear.
What does a green arrow showing at the same time as a red traffic light mean you
can do?
It means you may make a turn in the direction of the arrow; if the red light is illuminated at the same time, you must be in the proper lane for such a turn.
What does a flashing yellow light mean?
Proceed with caution. It is used to mark dangerous intersections, school crossings, and sharp curves.
If you are approaching a railroad crossing that does not have gates or lights and
you see a train coming, what should you do?
1) When approaching a highway-rail crossing, slow down and be ready to stop.
2) If you see a train approaching, stop your vehicle. Trains move faster than they appear, and you should never try to beat a train; the train will always win.
3) Never stop on the railroad tracks or within 15 feet of the crossing.
4) If pavement markings (connecting X, dynamic envelope) are present, stay clear of the edges of this pavement.
