Driving Safety Flashcards
In your vehicle, what should you adjust before starting the engine? (6)
The vehicle should be in park or neutral.
Adjust your seat so you can reach all controls.
Adjust all rearview mirrors so you can use them without leaning forward or backward.
Page 59
Move anything blocking your view of the mirrors or roadway.
Close all car doors.
Fasten your seat belt and ensure all passengers do the same.
What happens to the force of impact when you double your speed? Triple your
speed?
If the force increases by the square of the velocity, then if the velocity doubles, the force quadruples; if the velocity triples, the force increases ninefold; if the velocity quadruples, the force increases sixteenfold.
Unless otherwise posted, what is the speed limit for cars in a residential area?
30 MPH
What is the maximum speed limit on a limited access highway?
70 MPH
Can you be issued a citation for driving too slowly?
Driving too slowly is against Florida law. You must not drive so slowly that you block or delay traffic moving at normal, safe speeds. When driving slower than the flow of traffic, keep to the right so others may safely pass. On highways where the posted speed limit is 70 mph, the minimum speed is 50 mph.
What are the steps for making a smooth stop?
1) Check the mirrors and blind spots for rear traffic.
2) Release the accelerator to allow the vehicle to slow.
3) Press the brake pedal to activate brake lights and use steady pressure.
What is the arm signal for a left turn? Right turn? Slow or stop?
Left turn: Extend your left arm fully to the left.
Right turn: Make a 90-degree angle with your left arm, hand pointing upwards.
Slow or stop: Let your left hand hang from the vehicle window.
How long (distance) should you signal before making a left or right turn?
At least 100 feet.
When can you use a three-point turn? Where should you never make a three-point
turn?
1) You can use a three-point turn when the road is too narrow for a U-turn, and you can not go around the block.
2) You should never make a three-point turn on a curve, hill, highway, or where a sign prohibits U-turns.
What is an open intersection? When must you yield right-of-way?
An open intersection is one without traffic control signs or signals. When you enter an open intersection, you must yield the right of way if:
a) a vehicle is already in the intersection.
b) you are entering or crossing a state highway from a secondary road.
c) you are entering a paved road from an unpaved road.
d) you plan to make a left turn and a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction.
When may you drive in the left lane of a road with two lanes? With four lanes?
1) On a two-lane highway, you must always drive in the right lane unless overtaking and passing (when permitted).
2) On a road with four or more lanes and two-way traffic, drive in the right lanes except when overtaking and passing.
What does it mean if you see red reflectors on the lane lines facing you? What
should you do?
It means you’re going in the wrong direction, opposite to traffic. You must either turn around immediately or pull over if necessary, always chosing the safer way.
What is the recommended safe following distance?
4 seconds during favorable weather and traffic conditions.
When should you increase your following distance?
A) Rain or when roads are wet.
B) Low visibility.
C) When being passed.
D) Carrying a heavy load or pulling a trailer.
E) When stopped behind another vehicle on an incline; it may roll back before moving forward.
F) When following:
• Motorcycles
• Emergency vehicles
• Vehicles required to stop at a railroad crossing, such as city school buses and vehicles carrying hazardous materials
• Vehicles with a blocked rear view, like trucks, buses, vans, and vehicles pulling trailers.
What are blind spots?
Blind spots are areas near the left and right rear corners of your vehicle that you can not see in your mirrors or with your peripheral vision.
How do you check your blind spots when you are preparing to change lanes or
turn?
Turn your head to make sure the areas are clear.
Where is it unlawful to overtake and pass?
1) Where there is a single or double solid line dividing lanes.
2) When the double yellow line is solid in your lane.
3) Do not pass in no-passing zones.
4) On hills or curves where you can’t see at least 500 feet ahead.
5) Within 100 feet of an intersection, bridge, viaduct, tunnel, or railroad crossing.
6) When a school bus is stopped and has its warning flashers and stop sign extended.
7) At crosswalks where vehicles have stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross.
Under what circumstances can you stop in the acceleration lane on an
expressway?
You are not allowed to stop in the acceleration lane unless traffic is too heavy and there is no space for you to enter safely.
What should you do if you drive past your exit on a limited access highway?
Take the next one. Don’t make last-minute turns into an exit.
Where should you move your vehicle if you break down while driving on the
highway?
One should never stop on the pavement, shoulder, or connecting ramp except in an emergency. If your vehicle breaks down, you must move it completely off the pavement (no more than 6 hours).
What is the farthest away you can park from a curb?
12 inches
If you have a manual transmission, what gear should you put the car in when
parking downhill? Uphill? What if you have an automatic transmission?
Manual: R downhill, 1st uphill.
Automatic: Park.
Where is parking prohibited?
Crosswalks, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, bridges, overpasses, tunnels, in front of driveways, by yellow-painted curbs, NO PARKING or DISABLED PERMIT ONLY zones, on the roadway side of another parked vehicle (double parking), on highway pavement not marked for parking, anywhere that blocks or creates a hazard for other vehicles; or within:
a) 15 feet of a fire hydrant
b) 20 feet of an intersection
c) 20 feet of the entrance to a fire, ambulance, or rescue station
d) 30 feet of a rural mailbox on a state highway (8 a.m.–6 p.m.)
e) 30 feet of any flashing signal, stop sign, or traffic signal
f) 50 feet of a railroad crossing
Which way should you turn your wheels when parking uphill along a curb? Which
way should you turn them where there is not a curb? Which way should you turn
them if parking downhill?
You should always position the wheels so the car doesn’t roll into traffic.
Uphill with curb: wheels steered toward the street.
Uphill without curb: wheels steered toward the outside of the street.
Downhill: wheels steered toward the curb/outside of the street.
What does the Move Over Law require you to do?
Protects law enforcement officers, emergency workers, tow truck drivers, sanitation workers, utility workers, and road and bridge maintenance or construction vehicles displaying warning lights stopped along roadways while performing their jobs. It also protects disabled motor vehicles stopped and displaying warning lights or hazard lights, using emergency flares or signals, or where one or more persons are visibly present.
