Tug and log tows
Transiting mostly north and south to/from ports in north and south puget sound. Can be found transiting to/from deception pass
Ferries
WSF can be found in the area repositioning and fast ferry “Victoria clipper” in regularly scheduled runs from Seattle to Victoria BC
Naval and USCG
Vsls Patrolling and conducting exercises in the area also transiting to/from the many bases in the puget sound
Commercial fishing boats
Mostly transiting to/from sea, puget sound and Rosario strait. Can be found anywhere during openings
Recreational boats
Can be abundant in the area especially on nice days
Rosario strait
Consistent use by vessels bound for Bellingham, anacortes, and the San Juan Islands also transiting to/from Canada and Alaska. Vsls bound for British Columbia or Alaska frequently use it in preference to passages further west when greater advantage can be taken of the tidal currents less distance to travel
Deception passage
Also used by log tows and often prefer this route to avoid rough weather west of whidbey island. Also frequently used by pleasure boats bound to/from Seattle, anacortes, Bellingham and San Juan islands
