What is a Trade Union?
A trade union is an organised association of workers from a particular trade or profession.
formed to look after interests of members + improve working conditions
important role in workers rights+ determining labour markets as well as labour relations policies in this country.
Trade unions in South Africa
COSATU- the congress of south african trade unions
FEDUSA- Federation of Trade unions of South Africa
NACTU- National Council of Trade Unions
Aims and purpose of Trade unions:
- Improve the standard of education and training of its members
- improve the productivity of its workers
- improve conditions of service
- represent workers in the collective bargaining process
- settle disagreements and differences between employers and employees
- provide professional and legal advice to employees
- study legislation that may affect employees and provide union members with advice regarding this legislation
Collective bargaining:
is the process whereby employees stand together and negotiate jointly about pay and conditions of employment.
Exploit
take selfish or unfair advantage of a person in a situation
