Acute soft tissue injury or inflammation
Very young/old pt’s
Hiatal hernia
Joint hypermobility
When motion is contraindicated
Traction Precautions
Pregnancy
Joint hypermobility
Inability to tolerate position
Increased symptoms with treatment
Claustrophobia
Pressure of belt may cause problems (ie hernia)
TMJ
Traction Adverse Reactions
Significant increase in BP, HR Pain completely subsides Bladder and bowel problems
Traction Indications
Back, neck pain Nerve root impingement Joint hypomobility Subacute joint inflammation Paraspinal Muscle spasm
Effects of Traction
Distraction of joint surfaces Reduce disc protrusion Stretch soft tissue Relax muscles (increases ROM) Mobilize joints
Traction Purpose
Reduce muscle spasms and guarding Reduce Pain Reduce nerve impingement and signs Improve function (ROM, Flexibility, mobility)
Traction Definition
A Pulling force applied to the body in a way to seperate joint surfaces and elongate surrounding soft tissue. Therapeutic traction refers to Lumbar and cervical.
