Skin traction
A
When force is applied to a limb using felt/strapping applied directly to skin only. The doctor attaches light weights to the skin of the limb needing treatment to keep the two segments of muscle or bone aligned. Non-invasive procedure.

Skeletal traction
A
When force is applied to a limb segment through wire, pin, screws, or clamp. This is attached to bone. This type of traction requires more weight, and so cannot be used on skin. Requires a procedure performed in an operating room.
