Trace metals Flashcards
copper function
cofactor for enzymes used in iron use, collage synthesis and antioxidants
required for growth and development, bone maintenance, RBC formation
amount of copper in the body
100mg in body mainly in skin, muscle, bone marrow, liver and brain
copper absorption
actively absorbed from the stomach and duodenum
copper excretion
excreted in GI tract, some in urine and skin
daily copper requirement
1.3 mg/day
iron function
haemoglobin synthesis, cytochrome activity, urea cycle activity, lipogenesis, cholesterogenesis
iron in compounds
haemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes
iron storage
soluble ferritin or insoluble aggregate haemosiderin
stored in the liver, bone marrow and muscle
iron overload caused by
genetic, alcohol cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis, excessive blood transfusion
can cause skin pigmentation, cirrhosis and pancreatic fibrosis
causes of iron deficiency
bowel disease, cancer, osteoporosis, infections
iron deficiency symptoms
iron deficiency anaemia
tired, shortness of breath 3
function of zinc
lots of enzymes, activity of RNA and DNA polymerase, zinc finger proteins needed for gene expression
eg. alcohol dehydrogenase
zinc requirement
8mg women, 11mg men
