TRA/TPB Flashcards
What is the premise of the TRA?
Behavior predicted by intentions
Intentions predicted by attitudes
Attitudes made up of beliefs
What influences behavioral intentions?
Attitude toward performing the behavior
Subjective norm associated with the behavior
Perceived Behavioral Control
Degree to which someone has control over whether they can take action & strength of that belief
- Control Beliefs
- Perceived Power
Behavioral Intention
Thought to perform behavior
Attitude toward behavior
Overall feeling of like/dislike
Toward any given behavior
Behavioral Beliefs
Beliefs that performing given behavior
Leads to certain outcomes
Outcome Evaluation
Value a person places
On each outcome
Resulting from performance of behavior
Subjective Norms
One’s belief
That others think one should/should not perform the behavior
Normative Beliefs
What person thinks
Other people would like him/her to behave
Motivation to Comply
Degree to which person wants to act in accordance
With perceived wishes of others
Perceived Behavioral Control
How much person feels
He/she is in command
Of enacting given behavior
Control Beliefs
Beliefs about internal/external factors
May inhibit/facilitate performance of behavior
Perceived Power
Perception about how easy/difficult
To perform behavior
In each condition identified
In control beliefs
Limitations of TRA/TPB
Personality & demographic factors not taken into account
Perceived behavioral control predicts actual behavioral control (not always)
Longer the time interval between behavioral intent & behavior = less likely behavior will occur
Human beings = rational, systematic
Unconscious motives not considered
