When they regard themselves susceptible
To a condition that has serious consequences

Beliefs about person’s likelihood of having the problem
Perceived Severity
Beliefs about how serious the health problem is & its consequences
Perceived Threat
Perceived susceptibility + severity
Overall perception of threat to health
Perceived Benefits
Beliefs about benefits of action
To reduce health threat
Perceived Barriers
Beliefs about psychological, time, expense & other costs of action
Cues to Action
Info about perceived threat, benefits, barriers of particular actions Provides force (internal/external) to act
Self-Efficacy
Confidence in one’s ability to take specific action
