Socrates
Greek philosopher. Founder Of western philosophy. Teachings preserved by his contemporaries e.g. Plato.
Socratic Dialogue
Asking questions. Forcing people for reasons. Analyse key terms. Find the correct definition to find the truth.
1. Think of a question starting with what is.
2. They give a definition that comes straight to their mind with using common sense.
3. Socrates destroys their definition with a counter example.
4. They agree with Socrates in a grovelling manner then someone else steps in.
5. Then the process begins again.
6. He asks leading and distracting questions to which the listener agrees which gives Socrates the reply he wants.
Knowledge
Perception, true judgement and true judgement with an account. Socrates believes that knowledge is more useful than true beliefs because knowledge is justified true beliefs which means that there is evidence to show that something is true. However a true belief is not a justified belief.
Ad hominem
It is when the person attacks the arguer instead of talking about the argument e.g. How can you trust what he says, he is a politician and all politicians are liars. You have no idea what you are talking about, you have only lived here for six months.
Strawman
An affair description of the opponent’s view. e.g. You want to sell all our cars and make us sits around in the dark us hugging each other to stay warm.
You will bankrupt the entire country if you fund more public schools.
Leading question.
When someone asks a question which is they know the the answer or the question being sought e.g. You have done your homework haven’t you
Conclusion
When someone completes their argument
Indicator word: so and therefore. “ In football many matches end up 0-0 which means that football is not an exiting sport.
Analogy
Someone gets a point but gets other information to support their point e.g. You have to be as busy as a bee to get high marks in school.
Examples
When someone uses a concrete example to support their point e.g. just because boxing causes injury we should not ban it. Motor racing causes injury but we don’t ban that.
Why Socrates should escape?
People will blame his friends because they will consider them as bad people for not helping him escape and not raise money for a friend in need.
Socrates will leave his wife a widow and he has a job of staying alive and look after the children who will become orphans if he dies.
Why Socrates should not escape?
He will be disrespectful to the law.
Also he will spend his whole life in fear and hiding which will be damaging to his soul and character.
Glaucon

He discussed the nature of Justice and the ideal state.
He also presented the allegory of the cave which is when he makes contrasts appearance and reality.
Crito
Was a student of Socrates well connected young Athenian. He aims to convinces Socrates to make use of his resources and escape from the Athenian Prison and settle somewhere else.
Sophists
Socrates argued with the people who wanted to win the argument and didn’t want to know what was true.
Justice
Socrates attacks these points of Thrasymachus and explains Justice. It means men are more effective in action who are superior in character and intelligence while injustice means lack of character and intelligence.
