Describe Toxteth
A part of inner city Liverpool, 1.5km from the city centre.
Natural T
- Occupies undulating ground rising up from the banks of the river Mersey. A stream flows from the north east. There is a little foreshore at Toxteth.
Past T
-Established by Saxons, given to the knight Roger of Pictou in the Norman conquest.
- King John took it under his authority in the early 13th century and it became part of the royal forest.
- Opened up for farming in the 16th century, small scale industry become a growing characteristic .
- Became a major port during the industrial revolution. many factories established including a copper works factory.
Ship building industry was large, timber imported from Scandinavia.
- Toxteth became an attractive Greenfield site, property developed there
- Terraced cousin due to demand in IR = cholera etc outbreaks. Lack of sanitation
- Exodus of middle class residents to other GF sites.
-Becomes what it is today.
Demography T
High ethnic diversity (78.6% white vs ant average = 81.7)
Attracted in the 60s and 70s to the opportunities for low skilled work characteristic of an urban place especially following the Second World War.
Links with many countries, especially in the tropics.
Few elderly residents.

The BE has been adapted by migrant communities. Mosques and ethnic retailers for example.
