Describe Lympstone
A small settlement on the east bank of the river Exe estuary. In between Exeter and exmouth.
Natural characteristics - Lympstone.
Occupies a small valley cut by the Wooton Brook Through the red breccia cliffs at the edge of the river Exe estuary.
It has extensive tidal mudflats and a small beach of pebbles and gravel runs alongside the cliff.
Past Characteristics - Lympstone
- Occupied by saxons, having forced out the original Celtic settlers. Connections to the containment continued with the Norman conquest when ownership of the area was transferred to a succession of French families (De Traceys and the De Courtlands)
- 13th century, Operates as one of a number of small ports under Exeter’s administration. maintained its strong links to the sea as sip building thrived into the 19th century.
- Ship building industry ceases because oil size of ships. Estuary is used for shell shish fishing, mussels, whale and cod hunting.
- Tourism began in the 1840s. Wealthy families were attracted to seaside location. Expansion occurred in the mid 19th- century to accommodate visitors. Reamined small.
- Railway established in1861, improving national and international connection by time-space compression.
- Becomes a dormitory settlement for Exeter but retains a strong community.

Many people retire there, but doesn’t attract young people. - Very low ethnic diversity (1.1% non-white)
The west country provided very few jobs to immigrants in the 60s and 70s, beginning though to improve esp areas like Plymouth.

The growing significance of knowledge economy has has had a positive effect on Lympstone. Over a third of its residents are highly skilled professionals. The flow into Exeter of employment in services and knowledge based firms is considerable. The meteorological office is there , at the tie it moved there in 2003 this was the largest moment of technological equipment in Europe.
