What were the negative effects of the change?
Dock and Manufacturing job losses, poverty rates increased, 1981 toxteth riots, high unemployment. Lack of skilled workforce. Need for inward investment and multiplier effect.
How was toxteth regenerated?
Merseyside development corporation attempted to regenerate the dock area. 1988 art gallery opened, Tate Liverpool and City of culture 2008. Waterfront area is UNESCO heritage site. Liverpool science park. EU funds a low carbon sector
How has Lympstone changed?
Move from manufacturing to service sector, now dominated by agri-tourism. Large number of service industry moved to Exeter area, MET office move in 2003, higher education institutions, major hospital and company headquarters.
