TOXICOLOGY Flashcards
PHOSPHORUS ACTION
non metalic irritant poison
protoplasmic poison
under anaerobic conditions , metabolism of cell will diminish bcz of lack of energy called necrobiosis
classicaly manifested inliver
deposition of glycogen in liver is inhibited
deposotion of fat is increased
chronic absorbtion of phosphorus increases bone absorbtion
ACUTE PHOSPHORUS POISONING
symtoms and signs primary due to action of irritant on gastrointestinal tract secondary due to action of absorbed poison
primary acute poisoning symptoms
primary
due to action of irritant on gastrointestinal tract
burning pain in GIT tract(throat , oesophagus and stomach)
garlic odor in breathe
intense thrist
dark vomiting (garlic smell) darkened by blood
diarrhea= dark faeces
secondary symptoms
GIT and LIver manesfestations
necrosis of liver because phosphorus is a liver posion
in early stage liver= enlarged= fatty degeneration(NECROBIOSIS)
in later stage = shrunken=ACUTE YELLOW ATROPHY
pale faeces
Genitourinary Manefestations
pregnant women abortion
scanty urine
Nervous system Manifestations
insomnia , ringing in ear, frontal pain , vision problems
chronic Poisoning
PHOSSY JAW is an OSTEOMYELITIS of the jaw bone with multiple sinuses discharging foul smelling pus. other associated symptoms spontaneous fractures pregnant women usually abort irritation of resp passages
PHOSSY JAW
is an OSTEOMYELITIS of the jaw bone with multiple sinuses discharging foul smelling pus.
ML ASPECTS PHOSPHORUS
SUICIDAL POISONING
RAT paste and Vermin are taken to commit suicide
contain yellow phosphorus
accidental death
TREATMENT ?
CHEMICAL ANTIDOTE?
TREATMENT=STOMACH WASH
CHEMICAL ANTIDOTE= pottasium permagnate
contraindication phosphorus poisoning
oily and fatty substances including milk
ARSENIC (metallic irritant) action
combined with sulphydryl enzymes and thus interferes with cell metabolism
signs and symptoms arsenic
main effect= prod of diarhea (rice water) accompanied by tenesmus vomit painful cramps on leg cuz of dehydration narcotic poisoning features vertigoo, headache , stupor , spasms
acute poisoning
burning pain , nausea , intense thirst , painful cramps
chronic poisoning stage 1= nutrional and GIT disturbances stage2 =catarrhal changes stage3= skin rashes stage4= nervous disturbance
ML aspects of aresnic poisoning
cattle posioing
suicidal poisoning
homicial agent
accidental in children
catarrh change?
excessive discharge or build-up of mucus in the nose or throat, associated with inflammation of the mucous membrane.
arsenic vs cholera differential diagnosis symptoms pain in throats vomiting vomiting matter stool tenesmus appearence X rays narcostic poisoning
ARSENIC / CHOLERA
pain in throats before vomit/ after
vomiting precedes diarrhea/follows
vomiting matter mucus,bile,blood/ watery
stool rice water
tenesmus marked/not marked
appearence eyes congested/nope
X rays barium like radioopaque/nope
narcostic poisoning present/absent
lead
irritant metalic
combines with sulfhydryl enzymes leading to interference with their actions
multi organ toxin
GIT effects colic abdomen pain(lead colic)
haematologic effect heme synthesis is red= anemia
neurologic effect lead induced cerebral edema , impairs protein kinase and NT func and cuze motor neuron dysfunction
renal effect lead neuropathy(hyperurecemia with gout/saturine gout)
other effects dec throid func , bone grwoth , sperm count , can cross placenta
