Toxicology Flashcards
What are the 4 routes of toxicant exposure?
Inhalant, injection, absorption (dermal), ingestion
Define dyspnea
Difficulty or labored breathing
What is the general rule of toxicology
Treat the p not the poison
What are the ABC’s?
Airway, breathing, circulation
How long should eyes be washed and with what when exposed to toxin?
20-30 mins minimum, saline or tepid water
Which species is emesis contraindicated?
Rodents, rabbits, birds, horses, and ruminants
Which type of p’s are not good candidates for emesis?
p with cardiovascular abnormalities, poorly controlled epilepsy, recent abdominal surgery or is severely debilitated
Ture or False: It is not recommended to give cats hydrogen peroxide for emesis
True: cats can have an increased risk of developing hemorrhagic gastroenteritis
What is the max dose of hydrogen peroxide to be given for emesis?
45ml- Dose: 5ml/5lbs
Ture or False: It is contraindicated to give activated charcoal to animals that have ingested caustic materials
True: These materials are not absorbed systemically and the charcoal may make it more difficult to see oral or esophageal burns
What are cathartics used for?
Decrease GI transit time- contraindicated in a p with dehydration or diarrhea
What are two things that xylitol ingestion causes?
Hypoglycemia and liver failure
Define beta-blockers
Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. Beta blockers cause your heart to beat more slowly and with less force, which lowers blood pressure
