Q
isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) ingestion
A
alcohol dehydrogenase converts isopropanol to acetone (a ketone), which does not require Bicarb(therefore no metabolic acidosis).
- osmolal gap: lab - calc
- calc: 2xNa + BUN/2.8 + Glucose/18
- normal gap: 10
- if increased, there are unmeasured osms (ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, ethylene glycol)
- methanol (met acidosis, retinal abnorm)
- ethylene glycol (met acidosis, kidney failure)
- hypokalemia (toluene)
