what is a conduit?
a fountain where spring water flowed for all to use
what did people use water for?
cooking, washing and brewing but not drinking
what did most houses have?
thatched rooves where insects mice and rats lived
what were houses like in town centres?
tightly packed together
what were houses like further out of towns?
the houses would be more spread out and maybe gardens
what did people grow to try and eliminate disease?
vegetables and flowers because they believed bad smells caused disease
what were rules to keep cleanliness in tightly packed houses?
keep gutters, doorsteps, drains clean
why did people not follow the house cleaning rules?
there was no real police force or real punishments for not doing this
what problems did tavern ale cause?
drunkenness as it was strong brewed ale
what did london pay to be done after 1293?
rakers to clear the streets to get rid of animal dung and waste from food and goods that were on sale
what were townspeoples diets like?
similar to the villagers but the rich would eat more meat
what did drovers bring?
livestock into the town which would be slaughtered and leave carcasses
how many days could rubbish be left outside houses?
3/4 or there would be a fine
what did rakers do that caused bad health?
dumped rubbish into the river instead of taking it away
