Problems in the Lake District
Towns like Bowness-on-Windemere cannot cope with the huge volume of traffic – 89% of visitors come by car. Parking is limited and so some end up parking on grass verges.
Honeypot sites – areas such as the path at Whiteless Pike suffer from serious footpath erosion and other areas spoilt by litter.
Pressure on property – 20% of properties are second homes or holiday lets – dries up prices for local people.
Environmental issues – risk of wash from water vehicles eroding coast and fuel spills.
Solutions to the Lake District problems
New car park at Braithwaite Fold but still not enough.
More public transport.
Dual carriageways built around the edge of the area.
Verges fenced off.
Whiteless Pike path repaired with technique that cost £1000 per metre.
Litter bins put up with signs encouraging people to be responsible.
Little has been done – could build more houses but don’t want to ruin scenery.
Windemere has a speed limit of 18mph and the lake is zoned so that damage is limited.
