Describe and explain why tourism has grown rapidly in HIC’s and LIC’s
Tourism has grown so rapidly in HICs and LICs because, people are getting more disposable income in their jobs to do what they like with it and so they can afford holidays and to go to tourist destinations around the world. They often go to LICs because they are cheap and are often hot. also schools have designated holiday periods so it is easier to find a date to go with other people. Finally companies such as Thomas Cook have made package holidays so all they have to do is go onto the website and book it rather than book the flights then the hotel then the buses, day trips food etc.
What is the difference between describe and explain?
If you are asked to describe for instance, a graph then you need to say what has happened to it and how it looks but explain means say why this has happened and why the graph looks like this
Many LIC’s are trying to develop their tourism as it can bring economic benefits to a country. using a named country, describe some economic benefits
The Gambia
Tourism in The Gambia has meant that there are much more jobs to be taken eg working in airports, hotels and restaurants so people can earn more money. Also, as long as leakage doesn’t occur it brings more money into The Gambia and so it will be circulating around it.
Describe economic leakage?
Economic leakage is when the tourism spend in an LIC is controlled by another country eg, cost of planes, food, hotels are all charged by European organisations even though the money is spent in an African country so all the money people pay goes back to Europe rather then helping the LIC to grow, this is often countered with Ecotourism
Describe 3 environmental problems that could result from a hugely crowded tourist destination.
A lot of people will go to places away from their hotels so they will need taxis and buses, this will release a huge amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Also people will have to destroy habitats to make room for shops and hotels and so deforestation will happen more often. Finally people will leave litter in natural places and it will destroy the landscape of the environment
Outline 3 features of ecotourism
Ecotourism is a form of tourism that is designed to benefit the economy, environment and culture of an LIC therefore it is highly priced, it helps the economy by only employing local people so they can earn a living. It can help the culture of a country because day activities often involve learning about the culture of a country and it helps the environment by only doing activities that are environmentally friendly eg sailing and canoeing
