a person who makes a trip out his usual environment
Push and pull factors
Push— make ppl want to leave the country(e.g. due to poor infrastructure, lack of recreational activities)
Pull—attract ppl to a place and activity(e.g. scenic beauty, special events)
Ability to travel
- Increase in disposable income( can travel for relaxation->quality of life increase
- Increase in leisure time(paid leave)
- Biz inno in tourism-related industries
- Lower transport costs

(4&5)—>tour companies buy in bulk and sell in discount( i.e Thomas cook invent tour packages)
Mobility to travel
1.expansion of public transport service & infrastructure—greater connectivity within diff parts of country and diff countries
2. Intro of new modes of travel—save time->(e.g. bullet train in Tokyo from 6h40min to 2h10min->increase accessibility
3.increase in private car ownership—increase mobility->travelling more conveniently, increase domestic tourism
Motivation to travel
1.need for relaxation—due to hectic lifestyle(work hours increase->stress->need to rest&rejuvenate)
2.need to achieve personal growth& fulfillment—pick up a skill
3.need to discover unique travel experiences—satisfy curiousity of world>uncommon activities(e.g. hiking in remote forests)
Stages of tourism
- Exploration—small no.of tourists>undertaking individual & irregular travel to visit the destination’s primary attraction(e.g Jaco island,Timor Leste—few tourists due to inaccessible location
Stage 2–Involvement
Locals offer tourists service, advertising the location->requesting for more public amenities & facilities(e.g. Kuang si falls in Laos->authorities invest money to improve facilities-> increase no.of travel agencies and transport providers, increase accessible
Stage 3- development
Increase in tourists no. With destinations having more man-made attractions, advertisement and foreign labour( e.g. Phu quoc island, Vietnam received investments to build airport , seaport->attracted major biz)
Stage 4- consolidation
Growth in tourist no. Slow and outnumber locals resulting in a tourism dependent economy(e.g. goa in India-> in 2019, foreign tourists (7 mill) outnumber locals(1.5mill)
Stage 5– stagnation
Tourists no. Peak as a destination’s capacity reached in negative impacts. (E.g Hawaii, USA ->tourists arrival & expenditure decrease in late 1990 early 2000->Waikiki, became overcrowded, facilities and amenities became old and run down
6 &7- decline , rejuvenate
Tourists number drop as a destination region or is rejuvenated with new cultural or man-made attractions. 6–(e.g. black pool, uk -> once popular , lost attractiveness due to comp)
7- (e.g. black pool , uk ->invest 300 mill to build black pool central a world class leisure. Re-marketed it as a Muslim-friendly &disabled - friendly )
