what is a sense of place
sense of place is developed when ppl associate meanings and memories with locations. it is derived from our experiences with natural and built environment. -> highly personal. –> one location may hold diff meaning for diff ppl. –> homemakers associate hawker Centre with ideas of convenience as the often visit there to purchase meals but retirees —> leisure and relationships as they meet friends for drinks there

tendency of services placed tgt. e,g:

how can neighbourhoods be environmentally sustained

What is an ecosystem
Ecosystem refers to the benefits brought about by nature to people. The ecosystem consists of : provisioning services, regulating services cultural services supporting services
Provisioning services
Tangible resources that people can get from ecosystems such as food, water , and wood thru activities like agriculture
Regulating services
Benefits obtained from regulation of various ecosystem processes. E.g. climate regulation —> trees reduce air tem /cool down .
Water flow regulation—> retain water in soil to prevent surface runoff.
Flood control
Cultural services
Intangible benefits ppl obtain from ecosystems, including aesthetic experiences, educational opportunities, recreational activities. Buy kit Timah nature reserve—> hiking

—> edu opp when geog students go there for fieldwork.
Supporting services
Services that are necessary for the functioning of all other ecosystem services, including Sokol formation, pollination and photosynthesis.
Hazards: fire hazards, air pollution, traffic accidents
Refers to a process, phenomenon or human activity that may cause loss of life, other health impacts, property damage
Environmental stewardship
Actions taken by individuals , group, or network of actors, with various motivation and levels of capacity, to protect, care for or responsibly use the environment in pursuit for environmental and/or social outcomes
Disaster risk managements
Applying plans and actions ,to prevent new risk , reduce existing risk and manage disaster risks—> this then strengthens community resilience.
Community resilience
The ability of a community to resist, absorb, adapt and recover from the impacts of the disaster in a timely and efficient manner
