Touch and taste perception Flashcards
What is the law of specific energies?
a sensory receptor will be responsive to only one type of stimulus
What organ is the ultimate interpreter of all sensation?
brain
Where in the brain is the somatosensory cortex located?
postcentral gyrus
How are cutaneous receptors distributed throughout the skin?
they are not equally distributed but are clustered at different points
What is the relationship between receptor number and sensory acuity?
more receptors= more sensation
What is a receptive field?
area within which a sensory neuron detects a stimuli
What is sensory adaptation?
responds initially strongly to stimuli and then stop responding when stimulus becomes constant
What is referred pain?
due to damage in a visceral organ producing pain that os perceived at a difference location near the body surface
What is a taste bud?
Specialized epithelial cells arranged in the form of a barrel shaped receptor, associated with sensory nerves
What are the five categories of taste?
Bitter, salty, sweet, umami, sour
What chemicals stimulate each of the taste cells for each of the 5 tastes?
Salty= Na+ Sour=H+ Sweet=glucose or sugar derivatives Bitter=quinine umami=glutamate
