Touch Flashcards
How does transduction happen?
tactile information is sent to the brain when something touches the skin because we have receptors in our nerve endings that will send signals to the spinal cord and brain
Pain
we avoid pain producing circumstances (our amygdala stores the negative memory)
The Gate-Control theory
-the spinal cord has an area that acts as a “gate” that controls the transmission of pain messages to the brain
-only so many messages can get through the gate at once
-when hurt: pain will come flooding to the gate going along the slow conducting nerve fibers so rubbing the area where hurt will actually help since the signals go along fast conducting nerve fibers. Those signals will get to the gate before the pain which will limit the amount of pain that will be let through the gate, thus reducing the pain experience.
Endorphins
The body’s natural pain reliever, released when injured, stressed, laugh, cry, exercise
