Perception Flashcards
Principles governing perception
-gestalt principles (taking in environment and info as a whole)
-we organize sensory info according to “figure-ground relationship” and principles of “grouping” (looking for patterns)
Figure-ground relationship
-some objects (figure) stand out from background (ground) just as the voice stands out from the melody
-sometimes, interpretations are caught going back and forth (figure-ground unclear)
Principles of grouping (4)
similarity, proximity, continuity, closure
Similarity
similar characteristics= a group (patterns)
Proximity
objects close together in space or time are grouped
Continuity
we see complex stimuli as belonging together if we note a pattern (X is two lines not four)
Closure
complete figures with gaps in them (we fill in the gaps)
Depth perception
-seeing the world in 3-D (judging distance and being able to not fall in the stairs)
-Binocular depth cues (muscles in eyes as we look close&far, the difference in each retinal image
What is perception?
sensory information is organized and interpreted by brain
Illusions
false perceptions, misconceptions, missapplications of principles that work in everyday lives
Ambiguity
the brain has no prior experience to compare and tries to work it out by viewing it one way, then another
The impossible
follows our 3-D ability, but defies logic
Color constancy
-Perceiving familiar objects as having consistent color, even if changing illumination alters the wavelengths reflected by the object.
-Our experience of color depends on context. The ability to decode light is relative to the objects surrounding it.
