total pain Flashcards
articles purpose
to illustrate that effective palliative care needs services to respond holistically to ea indiv’s needs (creatively and flexibly considering the pts unique situation and how they and their fam can be best supported)
T or F teens w cancer have lower mortality rates than kids
F. they have higher mortality rates
which approach, proposed by Saunders, improves indiv coping strategies, thus reducing physical pain and in turn medication requirements
what do you consider with this approach?
total pain
consider the whole person, specifically the physical, emotional and spiritual elements
total pain=
a term to highlight the diff demensions of pain experiences
how does a total pin approach assist the pt
exploring the various aspects of pain exp assists the pt to contextualize and accept the aspects. this reduces anguish.
may reduce pain and therefore med requirements
is it commonplace in hospices in UK to treat symptoms continuously. what could result from doing or not doing this. would this be good or bad
yes. breakthrough pain is anticipated but meds may be given when unnecessary.
considereation fo the total person will show if this is problem for them or not
how might young peoples conversations regarding illness be different than adults
they often contain pretence because they want to avoid facing death.
they have concerns about how the convos will affect others and theyre aware that others might not want to hae such a discussion
how does early psychological intervention about pain and palliation change the pain experience
allows early exploration of issues that may later exacerbate pain and can clarify the pts views on how to manage pain, sedatio etc which informs later care
how could the care team have assisted Jack in having more of a sense of control
pt controlled analgesia infusion
earlier intervention from services (he was expressing his pain etc but needed more interventions??)
what is a counter argument for the total approach to pain
by pre-empting pain we reduce the need and ability for pts to articulate it, reducing their autonomy
recent research regarding total pain has shown what in terms of assessment
its important to have a thorough pain assessment which is appropriate to indiv needs, allowng spiritual, social, and emotional pains to be explored in combo w physical pains
one drawback or challenge to total pain
requires lots of time to be done properly
T or F. physical pain should always be alleviated before psych/emot pain
F. there is a need to assess the significance of ea diension of the pts pain as mental pain may be more imp to them than phys pain
