Describe the basic use of a helmet for treating plagiocephaly?
Early intervention is crucial. Change positions often. Use Helmet if older than 3 months and repositioning is not affective. Worn 23 hrs a day. Adjusted weekly or bi-weekly. Treatment lasts 3-4 months.
Untreated torticollis and/or plagiocephaly can lead to long term complications with?

Home interventions for torticollis includes?
- Positional changes
- Tummy time (extra time in prone)
- Stretch (avoid pressure to jaw, carotid artery and soft spots)
- strengthen the muscles and encourage symmetrical movements
What are physical factors that affect the prognosis of torticollis?
- Age of diagnosis
- Fibrous mass present at initial diagnosis.
- ROM (the more restricted the worse the prognosis)
- Support (family or caregiver)
- Distance to a clinic
What should be included in a treatment plan for torticollis?
- ROM
- Stretching 5-7 minutes
- AROM 5-7 minutes as tolerated (playing w/ toys)
- Prone position
- Ball play
If patient does not improve from treatment of torticollis in 6 months, what should be done?
Re-examine to rule out non-muscular etiology and reefer out to physician.
When should BOTOX be used for treating Torticollis?
Botox is used when conservative treatment fails and a last effort before resulting to surgery.
