Q

Explain how a Type I Torque Tool indicates the torque exerted?

A

Indicating Type - Indicates by means of a mechanical scale. Dial or electronic display, the value of torque exerted by the tool at the output drive.

Q

Explain how a Type II Torque Tool indicates the torque exerted?

A

Setting Torque Tools - pre-set to a certain torque value so that when the prescribed value of torque is exerted by the tool at the output drive, a signal is released (audibly, visibly or perceptibly).

Q

Explain how a Deflecting Beam torque tool signals the required torque has been reached?

A

Collapse at a point along the external length of the tool

The large angle of the handle break avoids over-torque.

Q

Explain how a Pre-Use check is conducted on a Type II torque tool?

A

All Torque Tools are to be calibrated every 12 months.

Torque Tools are to be calibrated with the use of Torque Analyser.

Each tool is to be tested at 20%, 60% and 100% of the tool’s capacity.

Each test consists of 5 repetitions at each percentage.

Class C and F require 10 repetitions during testing.

Tool must be within the “Maximum Permissible Deviation” parameters on every test.

Each class of Torque Tool has varying deviation scales.

Q

State two good practices for the use of Torque Tools?

A
  • Never over-adjust the wrench, handle or driver by exceeding the maximum capacity.
  • Do not use setting-type torque tools to undo fasteners. Indicating types with left hand torque capability may be used for undoing fasteners up to their maximum reading capacity.
  • Check the accuracy of the tool at the prescribed intervals.
  • Do not store adjustable setting type torque tools with the mechanism set above the range minimum value.

Q

When conducting torque checks on self-locking fasteners, how should the procedure be conducted?

A
  • The method for checking the torque load of a fastener will normally be specified in the relevant Maintenance Manual or General Orders applicable to a particular type of equipment. Where no specific instruction applies the preferred method is to loosen the fastener by one turn and then retighten to the specified torque.
  • Where a fastener incorporates a self-locking device the integrity of the self-locking medium is likely to be compromised by regular intentional loosening (e.g. Nyloc nuts). Unless otherwise specified, this type of fastener should not be slackened prior to checking the torque load.
