Torque Flashcards
how does W influence torque
W is proportional to distance, hence torque is higher when further from a pivot point
what units is torque in
Nm (proportional to length of axis)
what are the directions for torque
counter clockwise (+ve) and clockwise (-ve)
where do we measure distance from the pivot point
distance from the point (notes)
what happens if there’s no net torque
no angular acceleration
what is unique about the force component in torque e.g. Fr
we are multiplying force by the radius, but the force component is actually perpendicular, not the angle at which the object is pushed, so we need to work out the perpendicular component
what is the alternate formula for torque
tao = Fperp. x sintheta x r,
where theta is the angle between the force vector (perpendicular) and the r vector (horizontal)
what happens if force is applied directly on the pivot point
torque is 0
