Topologies Flashcards
List of basic topologies?
WWAN
WMAN
WPAN
WLAN
What is WWAN?
Wireless Wide Area Network
What is WMAN?
Wireless Metropolitan Area Network
What is WPAN?
Wireless Personal Area Network
What is WLAN?
Wireless Local Area Network
Describe WWLAN
Covers a vast geographical area Cellular technologies 2G GSM Global System Mobile CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) 3G WCDMA HSP
Describe WMAN?
used usually in the city
has a technology called WiMax
What is WiMax?
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access
Its a technology standard for long-range wireless networking
Pros of WiMax?
Low cost
Installed faster
Cons of WiMax?
The further the slower
Describe WPAN?
Used within close proximity
Examples, Bluettooth, ZigBee infra red
Low bandwidth and throughput is normal
Describe WLAN?
Provides networking for a building or campus
Multiple access points connected by a wired network backbone
What are the three service sets of 802.11-2007
Basic Service Set BSS
Extended Service Set ESS
Independent Basic Service Set IBSS
Difference between SSID and BSSID?
SSID service set ID is the name of the network.
Within each WLAN there is multiple access points therefore BSSID must be used
Difference between BSS and ESS
BSS consists of group of computers and one AP.
ESS consists of more than one AP.
Types of Access Points?
Autonomous AP - Standalone Device
Cooperateive AP - ap with switch like intelligence and that work together
Controller-Based AP - ap that communicates with central controller.
What does MSDU stand for?
Mac service data unit
Upper layer information contained the wireless data
What does DSS stand for?
Distribution System Services
A switch like intelligence in AP that forwards the MSDU
What is a client station?
Radio card that is not a part of AP
What does it mean client station associated?
When a client station has a layer 2 connection with an access point
What is IS?
Integration Service
enables delivery of MSDUs between DS and non 802.11 LAN via a portal
What does DS have?
Distribution System Medium
Distribution System Services
Examples of WDS?
Bridges repeaters mesh networks
What is BSA?
Physical area of covered provided by an ap.
ESS with Seamless Roaming
Always connected
ESS with Nomantic Roaming
Mobility between disjointed cells
ESS Colocation
When deploying an ESS with multiple AP with total or almost total overlap of coverage.
Intended to increase client capacity
Define IBSS
Peer to peer network
Doesnt need an AP
Communicate through the same channel
define MBSS
802.11s - 2011 amendment
uses wireless distribution of network traffic
Mesh Points use Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol
Acts as AP in BSS
Client Modes?
Infrastructure
Ad Hoc
What is an infrastructure client mode?
Allows communcations via an AP
Client can participate in a BSS or ESS
What is adhoc client mode?
Communicate without an AP
Participate in IBSS
What is Distribution System?
Interconnects a set of bss via integrated LAN creating ess
