topologies Flashcards
whats a mesh topology?
a network where devices are connected to other devices in a decentralised manner as there is no central connection point?
what topology is the internet?
mesh topology
pros of mesh?
- one device failure won’t affect the network
- high privacy and security of nodes
- faults can be identified easily
cons of mesh?
- costly compared to other topologies like bus and star
- maintenance is challenging
- complex process
whats the most basic topology?
ring topology
whats a ring topology?
nodes are connected in a circular format and they use tokens which send data in one direction around the network from one machine to the other. Preventing data collisions.
pros of ring topology?
- less data collisions
- easy to manage
- equal access to resources
cons of ring?
- if a node goes down it affects the whole network
- dependence on one cable
- expensive
whats a bus topology?
All the nodes are connected to a single cable known as the backbone and there are terminators at each end of the cable to prevent reflection of signals for better performance.
pros of bus?
- the length of the cable required is less than star
- the easiest topology for connecting devices
- very cost effective compared to star and mesh
cons of bus?
- not good for large networks
- additional devices slow down performance
- topology is very slow compared to other networks
why is redundancy important in topologies?
It provides more reliability and more paths for data to travel through so that data can keep flowing in the event of failure.
what is a star topology?
a topology where there is a central node usually a hub can also be router or switch and it acts as a server.
pros of star?
- high performance
- if one node fails it wont affect the whole network
- easy fault detection
cons of star?
- requires more cable than bus
- if the central node fails the whole network fails
- extra hardware required which is costly
