Topography of Brain and Spinal Cord (Task 2) Flashcards
Components of white matter
Myelinated axons
Components of grey matter
Unmyelinated axons, dendrites, neuron cell bodies
Dominate hemisphere for language comprehension and expression
Left in most cases but not always
Grey matter outer layer of brain
Cerebral cortex
Nerves running in dorsal and ventral rami
Dorsal - Sensory nerves
Ventral - Motor nerves
Cell body types found in dorsal root ganglion
Pseduounipolar cell bodies
Axons connecting cortical regions in same hemisphere
Association fibres
Axons connecting the two hemispheres
Comissural fibres (e.g. corpus callosum)
Contents of projection pathways
Afferent (arrive to brain) and efferent (exit brain) fibres which connect lower brain to spinal cord
Blood supply to basal ganglia
Lenticulostriate arteries (branch from Middle Cerebral Arteries)
Blood supply to the thalamus
Posterior Communicating Artery (Branch from Posterior Cerebral Artery)
Features of posterior cerebral artery syndrome
PCA supplies Occipital lobe, inferomedial Tempral lobe, Thalamus, Brain Stem and Midbrain Contralateral left or right visual field loss (hemianopia) Cortical blindness Visual agnosia Prosopagnosia Visual ataxia Dyslexia Mild aphasia
Features of middle cerebral artery syndrome
Hemiparesis/plegia of contralateral lower face and extremities
Sensory loss of contralateral face, arm and leg
Contralateral ataxia
Speech impairments/aphasia
Perceptual problems (neglect, apraxia)
