Topographical Anatomy Flashcards
What is anatomy?
Use structure in order to comprehend function. Uses words with specific meaning to aid in clear communication
Orbital
Surrounding the eye
Cervical
Neck
Thoracic
Chest - ribs
Lumbar
Lower back
Brachial
Upper arm (shoulder to elbow)
Antibrachium
Lower arm (elbow to fingertips)
Biped
Walks on two limbs
Quadruped
Walks on four limbs
Superior
Meaning above or toward the head of a biped
Inferior
Below or toward to feet of biped
Posterior
Toward the back of biped
Anterior
Front of a biped
Proximal
Closer to the main trunk of the body/ closer to the point of attatchment
Distal
Closer to the outer limbs
Dorsal
Top of a quadruped (think dorsal fin)
also top side of a limb (eg visible side of a dogs paw)
Ventral
Underside of a quadruped (think dogs belly )
Caudal
Toward the tail of a quadruped
Cranial
Toward the head of a quadruped
Rostral
Toward the nose
Medial
Middle
Lateral
to the outside
Palmar
Underside/ back of the front paw (metacarpals-phalanges)
Plantar
Underside/ back of the hind paw (metacarpals-phalanges)
Superficial
The outside ( think skin )
Deep
inside (think inner organs)
Axial
Closest to the long axis
Abaxial
Away from the long axis
Saggital Plane
Cuts the body across a medial line(cuts from head to tail through the middle) A perfectly symmetrical cut is mid saggital
Transverse Plane
cuts the body into superior and inferior parts (head and butt )
Commmon name - Shoulder
Segment- Scapular
Bone- Scapula
Palmar
Underside/ back of the front paw (metacarpals-phalanges)
Common name - Forearm

Bone - Radius (connects from inner wrist (near thumb) and travels across to elbow) Ulna (main thick bone)
