Ointments
Usually greasy, have petroleum jelly base. Good agents for skin protection-leave oily coating on skin
Creams
Combination of water, oil & other substances-not as much protection as ointment but more appealing-less greasy & absorbed into skin
Lotions
Similar to creams-contain more liquid-good for larger areas
Liniments
Various substances in oil, alcohol solutions of soap or emulsions for external applications. Most have heat producing effects
Gels
Suspensions of small particles-usually water based
Collodions
Liquids that dry as flexible films on skin
Transdermal patches
Similar to band aid-contains pad area which contains medication with adhesive backing- prolonged action - absorbing constant amount of medication-12 hours to several days
Suppositories
Cylindrical, egg or pear shaped for insertion into rectum or vagina- absorbed through skin into bloodstream or act locally
Vaginal tablets
Inserted into vagina with provided applicator
Ophthalmic preparation
Drops or ointment-must be sterile used to treat eye
Otic preparations
Usually liquids supplied in dropper bottle used to treat the ear
