Topic Seven - Magnetism And Electromagmetism Flashcards
What do all magnets have?
A north and a south pole.
What are some magnetic materials?
Iron
Steel
Nickel
Cobalt
Where do the lines from magnetic field lines go?
North to south.
What happens if the lines are closer together?
The stronger the magnetic field.
Where is the magnetic field the strongest?
At the poles of the magnet.
What happens if two of the same poles are put near each other?
They repel.
What happens if the opposite poles are put near eachother?
They attract each other.
What are permanent magnets?
Magnetd that produce their own magnetic field.
What are induced magnets?
Magnetic materials that turn into a magnet when they are put into a magnetic field.
What happens when a current flows through a wire?
A magnetic field is created around the wire.
What effects the strength of the magnetic field around a wire?
The current and the distance from the wire.
The larger the current or the closer to the wire you are the stronger the field is.
What is the right hand thumb rule?
Using your right hand point your thumb in the direction of the current and curl your fingers.
The direction of your fingers is the direction of the field.
What is a solenoid?
Wrapping the wire into a coil.
How do you increase the strength of a magnetic field?
You wrap the wire into a coil.
How do you make an electromagnet?
The magnetic field inside a solenoid has the same strength and direction at every point in that region.
Outside the coil the magnetic field is just like the one around a bar magnet.
You can increase the field strength of a solenoid by putting a block og iron in the centre of the coil. The iron core becomes an induced magnet whenever current is flowing.
